Child molestation charges against a Spotsylvania County man have been dropped.

Coy Michael Stieglbauer had been scheduled for a jury trial next week on charges of rape, object sexual penetration, sodomy, aggravated sexual battery and indecent liberties. Three of the charges carry mandatory life sentences because the alleged victim is under 13.

But on Thursday, Spotsylvania court records show, prosecutor Allan Budny dropped the charges. Defense attorney Jonathan David said tests recently showed that DNA recovered from the child’s bedroom did not come from Stieglbauer.

“I would never hurt [the child] and I am very relieved that these charges have been dismissed,” Stieglbauer said through his lawyer, adding that he wants the public to know he didn’t do what he was accused of.

David said his client had maintained his innocence from the beginning and refused to consider a plea agreement, even though he faced the possibility of three life sentences plus 25 years in prison.

The charges stemmed from allegations made in February, court records show. The 6-year-old girl was taken to a hospital for an examination after making statements to her grandmother. The child later talked to police.

David said his client believes the child’s mother and grandmother had ulterior motives in bringing the case to authorities.
